Accurate ICD-10 coding plays a critical role in optimizing Medicare reimbursement. This session focuses on strengthening coding practices within the PDPM framework to help facilities fully capture appropriate reimbursement opportunities. Participants will gain practical insight into how precise coding and supportive documentation can directly influence financial outcomes. This is a valuable opportunity for your team to enhance both reimbursement accuracy and documentation quality across the organization.

This session is appropriate for staff who are new to ICD-10 coding as well as those with prior experience who are looking to deepen and refine their knowledge.

During this two-day workshop, participants will:

  • Reinforce foundational ICD-10-CM concepts, including effective use of ICD-10 coding manuals
  • Review official ICD-10-CM coding guidelines and their application
  • Explore how clinical documentation supports accurate ICD-10 code assignment
  • Practice selecting the appropriate principal/primary diagnosis
  • Analyze PDPM components, including clinical categories, SLP and NTA comorbidities, and code mapping
  • Apply ICD-10 coding guidelines to long-term care–specific scenarios to ensure accurate diagnosis selection

Presenter Information:

Chris Gieger, MA, RHIA, CCS, CRC AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer

Chris has worked at large and mid-sized health care facilities in many roles where she gained a thorough understanding of health information management. Her coding career includes working in hospitals as both an employee and a consultant. Her work with Skilled Nursing Facilities includes medical record compliance reviews and ICD-10 coding support, audits and education. She helped author education programs for ICD-10 coding in preparation for PDPM and has served as an instructor for ICD-10 education.
